Why choosing an aged care course is an exciting career opportunity

Specialising in aged care is highly rewarding. It gives you the chance to make a real difference by building trusted relationships, supporting families, and helping older adults live with dignity. Plus, there’s never been a better time to begin or further your career in the sector, with Jobs and Skills Australia projecting that aged and disability carers will be the highest growth occupation in Australia over the next decade.

Tim Kane, author of Duty of care: how to fix the aged care worker shortage, has found that: “Australia will require at least 400,000 additional workers across residential and in-home aged care by 2050 to meet growing demand.” In response, the government has increased funding, improved working conditions, and raised minimum wages: “the minimum wage was increased by 15 per cent for aged carers, nursing support workers, and personal care assistants, bringing wages more in line with those for disability workers and higher than those for retail or beauty therapy workers.”

It’s important to remember that aged care is also a varied career with the ability to work in residential care facilities, in-home and in community respite centres. Elderly Australians have a variety of needs spanning from clients who are quite independent and require minor support in their home or daily lives, to those who need more intensive care in a facility. This variety means that there are lots of different roles to pursue. Additionally, you will learn from the people you care for and get to hear about their life stories, and undoubtedly, you will find that they beautifully affect your life in a way that you will never forget.
