All about the NDIS

What is the NDIS? It is a question that is often asked by people trying to work out how disability care works in Australia, and today, we are taking the time to explain it!

The NDIS, National Disability Insurance Scheme, is an Australian federal government scheme that helps people living with disabilities have a better quality of life. The scheme does this by providing Australians living with a disability the support that they need to improve their life skills, have better access to the community, and help achieve their goals. This scheme was created with the goal of centralising the funding system in Australia and boosting the support available to people living with a disability, whilst also allowing the flexibility that people need to achieve their own goals. As this scheme has increased funding and opportunities in the sector, it has created significantly more job opportunities for skilled and certified graduates to work within the disability care sector.

How the NDIS works

The NDIS was launched in 2013 to create a “managed market” for support services. This means that people with a disability are given a care plan and budget that they can spend with registered organisations to access the support they need. It allows people to live with more independence and use their own NDIS “care budget” to pick and choose the most appropriate services, equipment, and support for their needs.

The impact of the NDIS

According to NDIS statistics (31 December 2025), there are more than 760 000 people in Australia benefiting from the NDIS. From surveys of scheme participants undertaken by the NDIA (who manages the scheme) there have been dramatic increases in the satisfaction of people in the scheme with the average % satisfied with their life moving from 37% in 2016-17 to 56% in 2024-25

What does this mean to our current and future students?

Choosing a career within the disability sector is a smart choice with great job opportunities. Individual Support workers (those who help in the direct support and care of individuals living with disabilities) are in high demand across Australia, and with the NDIS still expanding, the need for skilled professionals is only growing. Additionally, there are many opportunities for people working in non-direct care roles as well – these are roles that help manage clients’ schedules, help run day programs or organise the many processes and systems needed in organisations that provide support to people in the scheme.

This is your opportunity to join a sector that’s making a real difference.
