Without having a good resume to showcase your skills, it can be hard to get a job. This is especially the case nowadays, when most application processes are managed through ATS (Applicant Tracking System) that rely on AI. These systems can eliminate the human touch, which means a good-looking resume is not enough, it should be ATS-friendly by including some keywords, have the right formatting, and keep information structured.
You need a resume that sells you as the best person for the job! We at h&h Accredited Training have put together our top tips to help you ensure that your resume is picked above all others:
According to Rachel Meltzer, a hiring manager takes about seven seconds to take a look at your resume and form their first impression. While they are proofreading, they are looking for some keywords. Make sure that you mention the essential ones, and don’t overcrowd your resume – any more than two pages won’t be read, so keep it to that length (one page is even better).
This should be a short, to-the-point letter introducing yourself and giving a concise version of your training and skills (you can expand on your skills later in your resume). The letter should state why your skills align with the criteria they have outlined and how you would be valuable to the business.
If the job you’re applying for is running the admin office of an aged care home, you probably don’t need to list the job you had in high school serving ice cream at the local movie cinema. Read the job description thoroughly and include all experience and training you have had that appropriately match the job description.
When creating your resume, it’s not the time to hold back on your achievements. Have you won any awards? Be sure to include them in your resume and highlight them in a way that truly stands out – this means including a short description of how or why they matter.
Make sure to have your contact details in the header of your resume so they won’t get lost among work experience content. If your resume is selected, a hiring manager might need to review it a few more times, and we don’t want them to wonder where your phone number is and change their mind!
While you shouldn’t include jokes, you should keep the tone of your resume positive, enthusiastic and interesting. Using words such as “eager”, “helpful” and “fulfilling” can create impact and assure your potential employer that you are driven and dedicated.
As we mentioned earlier, the ATS system helps hiring managers sort resumes, but at the same time, it requires you to consider the mentioned keywords. Write yourself a list of keywords that represent you and your work experience, and keep only the most important ones that are relevant to the job you are applying for.
